13. HAZRAT AYUB ( علیہ السلام ) [Prophet Job]

Hazrat Ayyub (علیہ السلام )

Nasab Nama Aur Quran Majeed Mein Aap Ka Tazkirah

Imam Ibn-e-Ishaq bayan karte hain keh aap Rumi-ul-Nasal thay aur aap ka nasab nama is tarah hai: Ayyub bin Mous bin Razih bin Ees (Eesu) bin Ishaq bin Ibrahim Khaleellullah (علیھما السلام) baaz ulama ne aap ka nasab is tarah bayan kiya hai: Ayyub bin Mous bin raweel bin Ees (Eesu) bin Ishaq bin Ibrahim (علیھما السلام)

Hafiz Ibn-e-Asakir (رحمہ اللہ) ne aik qoul naqal kiya hai keh aap ki walida Hazrat Lut (علیہ السلام) ki dukhtar thi. Aik qoul yeh hai keh aap kay walid un mominoon mein say thay Jo Ibrahim (علیہ السلام) par us din iman laye jis din aap ko aag mein dala gaya aur aap moajzana tor par salamat rahe. Pehla qoul zayada mashhoor hai. Ham is Ayat-e-Mubarika:

“Aur is (Ibrahim) ki aulad mein say Dawood aur Suleiman aur Ayyub aur Yusuf aur Moosa aur Haroon hain.” (Al Anam: 6/84) ki tafseer karte howe wazahat kar chuke hain keh ذُرِّيَّتِهٖ  Say muraad Ibrahim (علیہ السلام)  ki aulad hai, Nuh (علیہ السلام) ki aulad muraad nahi. Lihaza sahi baat yahi hai keh aap Hazrat Ibrahim (علیہ السلام) ki aal mein say hain.

“(Ae Muhammad) ham ne aap ki taraf isi tarah wahi bhaiji hai jis tarah Nuh aur un say pichle paighambaroon ki taraf bhaiji thi aur Ibrahim aur Ismaeel aur Ishaq aur Yaqoob aur Aulad-e-Yaqoob aur Eesa aur Ayyub ki taraf wahi bhaiji.” (Al Nisa: 4/163)

Sahih yahi hai keh aap Ees (Esau) bin Ishaq ( علیہ السلام ) ki nasal say hain. Aap ki zaoja mohtarma kay bare mein aik qoul yeh hai keh woh Yaqoob (علیہ السلام ) ki beti “Layya” theen. Baaz kehte hain keh woh Ifraeen ki beti “Rahmat” theen. Baaz kehte hain keh woh Minsa ki beti theen aur un ka naam “Layya” tha. Yeh qoul zayada mashhoor hai.

Quran Majeed mein aap ka tazkirah aik sabir aur shakir Nabi kay tor par howa hai jinhon ne lambi muddat tak bimari, Aal aulad ki halakat aur Maal-o-Mata kay chhin jane par sabar kiya, Neez dobara Inaamaat-e-Rabbani haasil hone par shukr guzaari ki. Irshad-e-Baari Ta’ala hai:

“Aur Ayyub (ko yaad karo) jab unhon ne apne parwardigaar say dua ki keh mujhe takleef pohnchi hai aur tu sab say badh kar raham karne wala hai. To ham ne un ki dua qubool kar li aur jo un ko takleef thi woh door kar di aur un ko baal bachay bhi ataa farmaye aur apni mehrbaani say un kay sath itne hi aur bakhshay aur ibadat karne waloon kay liye (yeh) nasihat hai.” (Al Anbiya: 21/83-84)

Dosre maqaam par Irshad hai:

“Aur hamare bande Ayyub ko yaad karo jab unhon ne apne Rabb ko pukara keh (ae Allah!) shetan ne mujh ko aiza aur takleef de rakhi hai. (ham ne kaha keh zameen par) laat maro (dekho), Yeh (chashma nikal aaya) nahane ko thanda aur peene ko (sheereen) aur ham ne un ko Ahl (-o-ayaal) aur un kay sath utne he aur bakhshay, (yeh) hamari taraf say rahmat aur aqal waloon kay liye nasihat thi, Aur apne hath mein jhaadu lo, Phir us say maro aur qasam nah todo. Beshak ham ne usay sabar karne wala paya. Woh buhut khoob banda tha, Beshak woh buhut ruju karne wale thay. (Saad: 38/41-44)

Hazrat Ayyub (علیہ السلام) ki aazmaish aur sabar ki intiha

Ulama-e-Tafseer aur Morkheen bayan karte hain keh Ayyub (علیہ السلام ) aik Sahib-e-Sarwat insaan thay. Maslan: Ghulam, Janwar (ghode waghairah) maweshi. Aur Harraan (sham) kay ilaqe Bisniyya mein wasee araazi kay qit’aat bhi thay. Is kay ilawa aap ki biwiyaan aur buhut say bachay bhi thay. Aap say yeh sab chin gaya aur aap ko sakht aazmaish say do chaar kar diya gaya. Aap ne is par bhi Allah ki raza kay liye sabar kiya aur din raat, Subuh sham Allah ka zikr karte rahe.

Aazmaish ki muddat taweel hoti gayi, Hatta keh dost yaar sath chod gaye aur aap say door door rehne lage. Aap say milna julna chod diya. Us waqt aap ki khidmat karne kay liye sirf aap ki zaoja mohtarma baqi reh gayi. Unhon ne aap kay guzashta ahsaanaat aur shafqat ko faramosh nah kiya, Chunancha woh aap ki khidmat mein haazir howa karti theen aur aap ki zarooriyaat poori farmateen. Hatta keh qazaye hajat mein bhi madad deti. Aahista aahista un ka maal khatam ho gaya. Woh aap ki giza aur khawand par aane wali musibat ko bade sabar say bardasht kiya. Kabhi woh tarah tarah ki nematoon say mala maal theen aur un ka be had ahtiraam kiya jata tha, Phir tang dasti aai aur unhain logon ki khidmat karna padi. Is kay bawjood woh saabit qadam rahain.

Nabi Akram ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) ka Irshad hai: “Sab say sakht aazmaish Anbiya-e-Kiraam (علیھم السلام) par aati hai, Phir zayada nek logon par, Phir jo un say kam darje kay hoon.” (Al Mustadrak lil Haakim: 3/343, Silsilat-ul-Ahadith-Al-Sahiha, Hadith: 143,144)

Mazeed Irshad-e-Nabwi hai: “Insaan par us kay deen kay mutabiq aazmaish aati hai. Agar woh deen mein mazboot ho to us ki aazmaish mein izafa ho jata hai.”( Musnad-e-Ahmad: 1/172, Jami Tirmizi, Al Zuhud, Baab-o-Maa Jaa fil Sabar Alal Bala, Hadith: 2398)

Apne Rabb Say Sehat Ki Dua

Hazrat Ayyub ( علیہ السلام) ki aazmaish jis qadar shadeed hoti gayi, Aap kay sabar, Shukr aur istiqamat mein usi qadar izafa hota gaya, Hatta keh aap ka sabar bhi Zarb-ul-Misaal ban gaya aur aap kay masaib bhi.

Bible mein Hazrat Ayyub ( علیہ السلام) kay Maal-o-Aulad khatam ho jane aur jismani bimari mein mubtala hone ka waqea buhut tafseel say bayan kiya gaya hai. Allah behtar janta hai keh us mein kis qadar batain durst hain.

Hazrat Mujahid (رحمہ اللہ ) ka qoul hai keh sab say pehle Ayyub ( علیہ السلام) cheechak kay marz mein mubtala howe thay. Aap ki aazmaish kitna arsa jaari rahi, Is kay bare mein ulama say mukhtalif aqwaal marwi hain:

Hasan aur Qatadah(  رحم اللہ علیھما) farmate hain: “Aap ki aazmaish ki muddat saat saal chand maah thi.”

Hazrat Humaid (رحمہ اللہ) farmate hain: “Aap athara (18) saal bimar rahe.”

Sudi (رحمہ اللہ) kehte hain: “Aap kay jism say gosht jhad gaya tha, Sirf hadiyaan aur pathay baki reh gaye thay. Aap ki zaoja mohtarma raakh laa kar aap kay neche dalti theen. Jab aik taweel arsa isi haal mein guzar gaya to unhon ne arz kiya: “Apne Rabb say dua kijiye keh woh aap ki musibat door kar de.” Aap ne farmaya: “Mein ne satar saal sehat ki halat mein guzare hain, To kiya mujhe Allah kay liye sattar saal sabar nahi karna chahiye.?” Zaoja mohtarma yeh jawab sun kar buhut pareshan howi kiyu keh woh logon ki khidmat kar kay us ki ujrat say Ayyub ( علیہ السلام) kay khane ka bandobast karti theen.” (Tafseer Ibn-e-Kaseer:Tafseer surah Anbiya: Ayat: 84)

Baharhaal is tarah din guzarte rahe. Un ki khidmat guzaar aur wafa shiaar biwi kay liye bhi halaat khathan say khathan tar hote jaa rahe thay. Aur khud Hazrat Ayyub ( علیہ السلام) kay apne Khuwaish-o-Aqaarib bhi un ki sakht aazmaish aur bimari wagairah ko bhi dekh kar un say sakht begaanigi baratne lage jo Hazrat Ayyub ( علیہ السلام) par badi shaaq guzarne lagi, Bil aakhir woh Baargaah-e-Ilahi  mein khoob gidgidaye aur Sehat-o-Shifa ki dua ki. Allah Ta’ala ne dua qubool farmayi aur chashma saafi say ghusul karne ka hukum diya jo un ki aedi maarne say jaari howa tha.

Shifayaabi par Inaamaat-e-Rabbani ki Barish:

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas ( رضی اللہ عنہما) bayan farmate hain keh Allah Ta’ala ne Ayyub (علیہ السلام) ko jannat ka libas pehna diya. Aap (sehat mand ho kar jannati libas pehn kar) aik taraf beth gaye aap ki zaoja mohtarma aayin to pehchan nah saki. Boleen: “Allah kay bande! Yahan jo bimar tha, Woh kahan gaya? Kahin usay bhaidiye to utha kar nahi le gaye?” Mein he Ayyub hoon.” Unhon ne kaha: “Mujh say kiyu thatha karta hai ?” Aap ne farmaya: “Tera bhala ho, Mein he Ayyub hoon. Allah ne mujhe mera sahi jism dobara de diya hai.”

Hazrat Ibn-e-Abbas ( رضی اللہ عنھما) bayan karte hain: “Allah Ta’ala ne aap ko wahi maal aur wahi bache dobara de diye jo le liye gaye thay aur usi qadar mazeed bhi inayat farmaye.

Wahab bin munabbah (رحمہ اللہ) farmate hain keh Allah Ta’aala ne aap ki taraf wahi naazil farmayi: “Mein ne tujhe tere ahl aur maal dobara de diye hain aur sath itne he aur de diye hain, ab is paani say ghusul kar le, Tujhe shifa ho jaye gi aur apne sathiyun ki taraf say qurbani pesh kar aur un kay liye maghfirat ki dua kar kiyu keh unhon ne tere maamilay mein meri nafarmaani ki hai. Lekin sahih baat yeh hai keh Allah Ta’ala ne un kay badle mein aur Ahl-o-Ayaal ataa kiye aur us say aik guna zayada bhi diye, Jis tarah mujahid (رحمہ اللہ ) say manqool hai.” ( Tafseer Ibn-e-Kaseer: Tafseer surah Anbiya, Ayat: 84)

Hazrat Abu Hurairah ( رضی اللہ عنہ) say riwayat hai keh Nabi ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) ne farmaya: “Jab Allah Ta’ala ne Ayyub (علیہ السلام) ko sehat ataa farmayi to aap par sone ki tidiyun ki barish kar di. Aap unhain hathoon say pakad pakad kar kapde mein dalne lage. Aap ko nida aayi: “Ayyub! Kiya sair nahi howe?” Aap ne arz kiya: “Ya Rabb! Teri rahmat say kon sair (aur mustaghni) ho sakta hai?”  (Tafseer Ibn-e-Abi Haatim: 8/2461)

Hazrat Abu Hurairah ( رضی اللہ عنہ) hi say riwayat hai keh Rasoollullah (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) ne farmaya: “Ayyub (علیہ السلام) kapde utaar kar ghusul farma rahe thay keh sone ki tidiyun ka aik jhund aap par aa gira. Ayyub (علیہ السلام ) muthiyaan bhar bhar kar kapde mein dalne lage. Allah Azza wa jaal ne aawaaz di: “Ayyub! Kiya mein ne tujhe is say mustaghani nahi kar diya jo tu dekh raha hai?” Unhon ne arz kiya: “Jee haan! Ya Rabb! Lekin mein teri barkat say mustaghni nahi ho sakta.” (Sahih Bukhari, Ahadith-ul-Anbiya, Baab-o-qoul-llahi Ta’ala و ایوب اذ نادی ربہ, Hadith: 3391, Musnad-e-Ahmad: 2/314)

Irshad-e-Baari Ta’ala: “Apna paaon maro.” Ka matlab hai keh Zameen par apna paaon maro. Ayyub (علیہ السلام ) ne hukum ki tameel ki. Allah Ta’ala ne wahan say thande paani ka chashma jaari farma diya aur hukum diya keh us ka paani piyain aur usi paani say ghusul karain, Chunancha Allah Ta’ala ne aap ki takleef, Dard aur jism ki tamam zahiri aur baatini bimariyaan door farma deen aur Zaahiri-o-Baatini tandrusti kay sath sath kaamil Jamaal aur buhut say maal say bhi nawaza hatta keh sone ki tidiyun ki barish howi aur dolat is tarah naazil howi jaise meena barasta hai.

Allah Ta’ala ne aap ko Ahl-o-Ayaal bhi ataa farmaye. Jaise Irshad hai: وَّاٰتَيْنٰهُ اَهْلَهٗ وَمِثْلَهُمْ مَّعَهُمْ “Aur us ko Ahl-o-Ayaal ataa farmaye, Balkeh un kay sath itne he aur bhi.” (Al Anbiya: 21/84) baaz ulama ne is ka matlab yeh ayan kiya hai keh wahi fot shuda afraad zinda ho gaye aur baaz ne kaha keh Allah Ta’ala ne fot shuda afraad ki jaga aur aulad de di aur qayamat mein pehli aur pichli sab aulad jama ho kar aap ko mil jaye gi. Yeh hamari khas mehrbaani aur ahsaan tha. ذِكْرٰي لِلْعٰبِدِيْنَ “Taakeh sachy bandon kay liye (sabab) nasihat ho.” ( Al Anbiya: 21/84) Yaani jis shaks ko jism mein ya maal mein ya aulad mein Ibtila-o-Masaib pesh aayain, Woh Allah kay Nabi Hazrat Ayyub (علیہ السلام) ki perwi kare jinhain Allah ne us say badi aazmaish say do chaar kiya tha lekin unhon ne sabar kiya aur Allah say Ajar-o-Sawab ki umeed rakhi hatta keh Allah Ta’ala ne masaib door farma diye.

Is kay baad Ayyub (علیہ السلام) room kay ilaqay mein sattar saal zindah rahe aur Deen-e-Ibrahimi par qaim rahe.

Sach to yeh hai keh ham ne usay bada sabir banda paya, Woh bada nek banda tha aur Allah ki taraf buhut ruju karne wala tha.” (Saad: 38/44) ka matlab yeh hai keh Hazrat Ayyub (علیہ السلام) ne kisi baat say naraaz ho kar yeh qasam khayi thi keh jab woh sahih howe to apni biwi ko so kode marain ge. Allah Ta’ala ne unhain farmaya keh apni qasam is tarah poori karo keh aik so shakoon wali tehni le kar maro aap ki qasam poori ho jaye gi. (Tafseer Ibn-e-Kaseer: 5/317, Tafseer Surah Saad, Ayat: 44)

Yeh aik aur khusoosi riaayat thi us bande kay liye jo taqwa aur Itaa’at-e-Ilahi par pukhta raha aur us khatoon kay liye bhi jo Allah ki raza kay liye neki ki raah par Sabar-o-Istiqamat say qaim reh kar tamam dukh jhelti rahain. Allah un say raazi ho.

Yahi waja hai keh Allah Ta’ala ne is rukhsat kay bayan kay baad us ki waja in alfaaz mein Irshad farmayi: اِنَّا وَجَدْنٰهُ صَابِرًا ۭ نِعْمَ الْعَبْدُ ۭ اِنَّهٗٓ اَوَّابٌ  ۭ “Sach to yeh hai keh ham ne usay bada saabir banda paya, Woh bada nek banda tha aur Allah ki taraf badi he rughbat rakhne wala tha.”  (Saad: 38/44)

Ibn-e-Jareer ( رحمہ اللہ) aur dosre morkheen bayan karte hain keh Hazrat Ayyub ( علیہ السلام) ki umar tiranaway (93) saal howi.

Nataij-o-Fawaid…….Ibratain-o-Hikmatain

Sabar-o-Raza kay pekar:

Hazrat Ayyub (علیہ السلام): Hazrat Ayyub (علیہ السلام) kay qissay say Ahl-e-Iman ko Sabar-o-Raza ka dars milta hai. Ibtila-o-Shadaid par Jaza-o-Faza karne ki bajaye, Allah Ta’ala ki taraf ruju karne aur us say shifa mangne ka sabaq milta hai. Allah Ta’ala ne Hazrat Ayyub (علیہ السلام) kay Sabar-o-Raza ki Tareef-o-Sataish karte howe farmaya:

“Sach to yeh hai keh ham ne usay bada he sabir paya, Woh bada nek banda Allah ki taraf buhut ruju karne wala tha.” (Saad: 38/44) Hazrat Ayyub (علیہ السلام) ko Allah Ta’ala ne har qisam kay amwaal, Maweshi, Chopaye, Ghulam aur Wasee-o-Areez zameen kay ilawa kaseer aulad say nawaza tha. Phir Allah Ta’ala ki taraf say aazmaish aagayi aur yeh sara Maal-o-Asbaab khatam ho gaya. Sirf aik gham gusaar biwi baqi bachi. Phir aap kay jism ka bhi marz ki shakal mein imtihaan shuru ho gaya, Hatta keh aap ko shehr say bahir aik weerane mein panah leni padi. Yeh dour ibtila 18 saloon par muheet raha, Magar is arsay mein aap ne kabhi Shikwa-o-Shikayat ko zuban par nah aane diya, Balkeh Sabar-o-Shukr kay pekar ban kar apne Rabb ki taraf Iltija-o-Dua karte. Bil aakhir aap ki aazmaish khatam howi aur Allah Ta’ala ne aap kay Sabar-o-Shukr par pehle say bhi zayada Maal-o-Aulad ataa farmaye. Irshad-e-Baari Ta’ala hai:

“Ayyub ki us halat ko yaad karo jab us ne apne Rabb ko pukara keh mujhe yeh bimari lag gayi hai aur tu sab rehm karne waloon say zayada rehm karne wala hai. To ham ne us ki sun li aur jo dukh unhain tha usay door kar diya aur us ko Ahl-o-Ayaal ataa farmaye balkeh un kay sath wese hi aur bhi apni khas meherbaani say, Taakeh sachay bandoon kay liye sabab nasihat ho.”  (Al Anbiya: 21/83-84)

Is say maloom howa keh mushkil kusha, Ghous-e-Aazam, Ganj bakhsh aur dastageer sirf Zaat-e-Ilahi hai. Mushkilaat aur masaib mein sirf usay hi pukarna chahiye. Neez Imtihaan-o-Aazmaish mein Sabar-o-Raza ka muzahara karna chahiye. Sabar-o-Shukar karne waloon ko Rabb-ul-Aalmeen apni khusoosi inaayaat say nawazta hai. Rasool-e-Maqbool (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) Sabar-o-Shukar ki fazeelat bayan karte howe farmate hain:

“Momin ko jo bhi jismani dukh, Takleef, Dard, Huzan, Bimari ya gham pohnchta hai hatta keh usay chubhne wale kaante say bhi Allah Ta’ala us ki khatayain maaf farma deta hai.” (Sahih Bukhari, Al Marza, Baab-o-Maa Jaa Fi Kaffarat-e-Al Maraz……, Hadith: 5641)

Ilaaj karna aur dawa istimaal karna Sabar-o-Raza ke manafi nahi hai. Allah Ta’ala ne aap ko chashme ka paani pene aur us say ghusul karne ka hukum diya, Halankeh woh maalik us kay baghair bhi shifa dene par qaadir hai. Yeh is baat ki wazih daleel hai keh shifa kay husool kay liye asbaab ikhtiyaar karna zaroori hai. Rasool-e-Akram (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) kay Uswa –e-Hasna say bhi ilaaj ki targheeb milti hai.

Aap ne ummat kay liye sehat bakhsh dawayain bhi tajweez farmayi hain jo is baat ka suboot hain keh ilaaj karna aur karana zaroori hai. Aap ne kaloonji kay fawaid bayan karte howe farmaya: “Siyah daane (kaloonji) ko istimaal kiya karo kiyun keh is mein mout kay siwa har bimari ki shifa hai.” (Jami Tirmizi: Al Tibb, Baab-o-Maa Jaa Fil Habbat-e-Al Saodaai, Hadith: 2041)

Is kay ilawa Nabi Kareem (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) shehd ko be had pasand karte thay aur bimariyun kay ilaaj kay liye usay tajweez farmate thay kiyu keh Irshad-e-Baari Ta’ala hai: فِيْهِ شِفَاۗءٌ لِّلنَّاسِ  “Is mein logon kay liye shifa hai.” (Al Nahal: 16/69)

Lihaza Nabi (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) farmate hain:

“Shifa teen cheezon mein hai: Phichne lagwane, Shehd kay peene mein aur aag say daag lagwane mein lekin mein apni ummat ko daag lagwane say mana karta hoon.” (Sahih Bukhari, Al Tibb, Baab-ul-Shifa fil Sulus, Hadith: 5680)

Biwi say Husun-e-Sulook:

Aik din kisi baat par aap naraz ho gaye aur qasam uthayi keh sehat yaab hone par unhain so kode Batour-e-Saza marain ge. Aap sehat yaab howe to Allah Ta’ala ne aap ko wafa shiaar zaoja muhtarma kay liye saza mein khusoosi zari’ye say takhfeef kara kay, Mominoon ko imandaar, Wafa shiaar, Tangi turshi ki sathi azwaaz kay sath nek sulook karne ki targheeb dilayi hai. Rasool-e-Akram (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) mominoon ko biwiyun say Husun-e-Sulook ki targheeb dete howe farmate hain: “Tum mein say behtreen shaks woh hai jo apne ghar waloon kay liye behtreen hai aur mein tum mein say apne ghar waloon kay liye behtreen hoon.” (Jami Tirmizi, Al Manaqib, Baab-o-Fazal-e-Azwaaj-e-Al Nabi (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم), Hadith: 3895)

Prophet Job (Ayoub)

Job’s Family History

Ibn Ishaaq stated that he was a man of Rum. His name was Job, Ibn Mose, Ibn Razeh, Ibn Esau, Ibn Isaac (pbuh), Ibn Abraham (pbuh). Someone else said he was Job, Ibn Mose, Ihn Rimil, Ibn Esau, Ibn Isaac, Ibn Jacob. There have also been other statements on his lineage. Ibn Asaker narrated that his mother was a daughter of Lot (pbuh). It was said, also that his father was one who believed in Abraham (pbuh) when he was cast into the fire.

The first opinion is the most plausible, because he was a descendant of Abraham’s offspring as Allah Almighty declared:

“That was Our proof which We gave Abraham against his people. We raise whom we will in degrees. Certainly your Lord is All-Wise, All Knowing. And We bestowed upon him Isaac and Jacob, each of them We guided and before him. We guided Noah, and among his progeny David, Solomon, Job, Joseph, Moses, and Aaron. Thus do We reward the good doers. (Ch 6:83-84)

 Allah’s Praises of Job

Allah the Almighty praised His worshipper Job in His Glorious Quran:

“Truly! We found him patient. How excellent a slave! Verily, he was ever oft returning in repentance to Us!” (Ch 38:44)

Job (pbuh) was repentant, remembering Allah with thankfulness, patience, and steadfastness. This was the cause of his rescue and the secret of Allah’s praising him.

A group of angels were discussing Allah’s other human creatures, how those who were humble earned Allah’s pleasure, while those who were arrogant incurred His displeasure. One of the angels remarked: “The best creature on earth today is Job, a man of noble character who displays great patience and always remembers his Generous Lord. He is an excellent model for the worshippers of Allah. In return, his Lord has blessed him with a long life and plenty of servants, as well as the needy and the poor share in his good fortune; he feeds and clothes the poor and buys skives to set them free. He makes those who receive his charity feel as if they are favoring him so kind and gentle is he.”

Iblis’ Jealousy of Job

Iblis overhearing all of this, became annoyed. He planned to tempt Job to corruption and disbelief. so he hastened to him. He tried to distract Job from his prayers by whispering him about the good things in life but Job was a true believer and would not let evil thoughts tempt him. This disturbed Iblis even more; thus he began to hate Job even more.

Iblis Destroys Job’s Wealth

Iblis complained to Allah about Job. He said that although he was continuously glorifying Allah he was not doing so out of his sincerity but to satisfy Allah so that his wealth should not be taken away. It was all a show, all out of greed. “If You remove his wealth then You will find that his tongue will no longer mention Your name and his praying will stop.”

Allah told Iblis that Job was one of His most sincere devotees. He did not worship Him because of the favors; his worship stemmed from his heart and had nothing to do with material things. But to prove to Iblis the depth of Job’s sincerity and patience. Allah allowed him to do whatever he and his helpers wished with Job’s wealth.

Iblis was very happy. he gathered his helpers and set about destroying Job’s cattle, servants and farms until he was left with no possessions. Rubbing his hands in glee, Iblis appeared before Job in the guise of a wise old man and said to him “All your wealth is lost, some people say that it is because you gave too much charity and that you are wasting your time with your continuous prayers to Allah. Others say that Allah has brought this upon you in order to please your enemies. If Allah had the capacity to prevent harm, then He would have protected your wealth.” True to his belief, Job replied: “What Allah has taken away from me belongs to Him. I was only its trustee for awhile. He gives to whom He wills and withholds from whom He wills.” With these words, Job again prostrated to his Lord.

 Iblis Destroys Job’s Children

When Iblis saw this, he felt frustrated, so he again addressed Allah: “I have stripped Job of all his possessions, but he still remains grateful to You. However he is only hiding his disappointment, for he places great store by his many children. The real test of a parent is through his children. You will see how Job will reject You.”

Allah granted Iblis authority but warned him that it would not reduce Job’ faith in His Lord not his patience.

Iblis again gathered his helpers and set about his evil deeds. He shook the fountain of the house in which Job’s children were living and sent the building crashing, killing all of them. Then he went to Job disguised as a man who had come to sympathize with him. In a comforting tone he said to Job: “The circumstances under which your children died were sad. Surely, your Lord is not rewarding you properly for all your prayers.” Having said this, Iblis waited anxiously hoping Job was now ready to reject Allah.

But again Job disappointed him by replying: “Allah sometimes gives and sometimes takes. He is sometimes pleased and sometimes displeased with our deeds. Whether a thing is beneficial or harmful to me, I will remain firm in my belief and remain thankful to my Creator.” then Job prostrated to his Lord. At this Iblis was extremely vexed.

Iblis Destroys Job’s Health

Iblis called on Allah. “O my Lord, Job’s wealth is gone, his children are dead, and he is still healthy in body, and as long as he enjoys good health he will continue to worship You in the hope of regaining his wealth and producing more children, Grant me authority over his body so that I may weaken it. He will surely neglect worshipping You an will thus become disobedient.”

Allah wanted to teach Iblis a lesson that Jo was a devoted servam of his Lord so He granted Iblis his 3rd request but placed a condition: “I give you authority over his body but not over his soul, intellect or heart, for in these places reside the knowledge of Me and My religion.”

Armed with this new authority, Iblis began to take revenge on Job’s body and filled it with disease until it was reduced to mere skin and bone and he suffered severe pain. But through all the suffering Job remained strong in his faith, patiently bearing all the hardships without complaining. Allah’s righteous servant did not despair or tum to others for help but remained hopeful of Allah’s mercy. Even close relatives and friends deserted him. Only his kind, loving wife stayed with him. In his hour of need, she showered her kindness on him and cared for him. She remained his sole companion and comforter through the many years of suffering.

Job’s Life – Summary

Ibn Asaker narrated: “Job was a man having much wealth of all kinds, beats, slaves, sheep, vast lands of Haran and many children. All those favors were taken from him and he was physically afflicted as well. Never a single organ was sound except his heart and tongue, with both of which he glorified Allah, the Almighty all the time day and night. His disease lasted for a long time until his visitors felt disgusted with him. His friends kept away from him and people abstained from visiting him. No one felt sympathy for him except his wife. She took good care of him, knowing his former charity and pity for her.”

Job’s Prayer for Mercy

Therefore Iblis became desperate. He consulted his helpers, but they could not advise him. They asked: “How is it that your cleverness cannot work against Job, yet you succeeded in misleading Adam the father of man, out of Paradise?”

Iblis went to Job’s wife in the form of a man. “Where is your husband?” he asked her. She pointed to an almost lifeless form crumbled on the bed and said: “There he is, suspended between life and death.”

Iblis reminded her of the days, when Job had good health, wealth and children. Suddenly, the painful memory of years of hardship overcame her, and she burst into tears. She said to Job:

“How long are you going to bear this torture from our Lord? Are we to remain without wealth, children or friends forever? Why don’t you call upon Allah to remove this suffering?”

Job sighed, and in a soft voice replied

“Iblis must have whispered to you and made you dissatisfied. Tell me how long did I enjoy good health and riches?”

 She replied: “eighty years.”

Then Job replied: “How long am I suffering like this?”

 She said: “seven years.”

Job then told her: “In that case I am ashamed to call on my Lord to remove the hardship, for 1 have not suffered longer than the years of good health and plenty. It seems your faith has weakened and you are dissatisfied with the fate of Allah. If I ever regain health, I swear I will punish you with a hundred strokes! From this day onward, I forbid myself to eat or drink anything by your hand. Leave me alone and let my Lord do with me as He pleases.”

Job’s Health is Restored Crying bitterly and with a heavy heart, she had no choice but to leave him and seek shelter elsewhere. In this helpless sate, Job turned to Allah, not to complain but to seek His mercy:

“Verily distress has seized me and You are the Most Merciful of all those who show mercy.” so We answered his call, and we removed the distress that was on him, and We restored his family to him (that he had lost), and the like thereof along with them as a mercy from Ourselves and a Reminder for all who worship Us”

(Ch 21:83-84)

Almighty Allah also instructed:

“Remember Our slave Job, when he invoked His Lord saying: “Verily! Satan has touched me with distress (by losing my health) and torment (by losing my wealth)!” Allah said to him: “Strike the ground with your foot: This is a spring of water to wash in and cool and a refreshing drink.” And We gave him back his family, and along with them the like thereof as a Mercy from Us, and a reminder for those who understand.”

(Ch 38:41-43)

Job obeyed and almost immediately his good health was restored. Meanwhile, his faithful wife could not longer bear to be parted from her husband and returned to him to beg his forgiveness. desiring to serve him. On entering her house, she was amazed at the sudden change: Job was again healthy! She embraced him and thanked Allah for His mercy.

Job was not worried, for he had taken an oath to punish her with a hundred strokes if he had regained health but he had no desire to hurt her. He knew if he did not fulfill the oath, he would be guilty of breaking a promise to Allah. Therefore in His wisdom and mercy, Allah came to the assistance of His faithful servant and advised him: “take in your hand a bundle of thin grass and strike there with your wife, and break not your oath.

“Truly! We found him patient. How excellent a slave! Verily, he was ever oft returning in repentance to Us!” (Ch 38:44)

Prophet Muhammad’s Account on Job

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said:

“While Job was naked, taking a bath, a swarm of gold locusts fell on him, and he started collecting them in his garment. His Lord called him: “O Job! Have I not made you too rich to need what you see?” He said: “Yes, My Lord! But I cannot shun Your Blessings.” (Al Bukhari)
