Ulama se mulaqat, aur ilm ke liye safar karna [The Virtue of Meeting Scholars, and Travelling in Search of Knowledge]
➤ Ulama se Milne ki Fazilat : الرحلة في طلب العلم ki Roshni Mein
Ilm ke liye safar Anbiya ka tareeqa hai:
Hazrat Musa alaihissalam, Hazrat Khizr alaihissalam se ilm hasil karne ke liye safar par nikle. Farmaya:
“Kya main aap ke saath reh sakta hoon taake jo hidayat ka ilm aap ko diya gaya hai, us mein se mujhe bhi sikhayen?”
(Surah Al-Kahf 18:66)
Yeh ayat batati hai ke bade martabe wala aalim bhi mazeed ilm ke liye doosre sahib-e-ilm ke paas jata hai.
➤ Ek masle ke liye bhi taweel safar kiya jata tha
Hazrat Jabir bin Abdullah raziyallahu anhuma ne ek hadees sunne ke liye taqreeban ek mahine ka safar kiya aur Hazrat Abdullah bin Unais raziyallahu anhu se mulaqat ki.
“Jo shakhs ilm ki talaash mein koi raasta ikhtiyar karta hai, Allah us ke liye us ke zariye Jannat ka raasta aasaan farma deta hai.”
(Sahih Muslim: 2699)
Is mein aalim ki majlis tak jaane, dars mein shirkat karne aur ilm ke liye safar karne ki badi targheeb maujood hai.
Bilmushafaha mulaqat mein sirf maloomat nahi, tarbiyat bhi milti hai
Isi liye Salaf sirf kitabein jama nahi karte the, balke ahl-e-ilm ki majalis aur sohbat talaash karte the.
➤ Sanad aur ilm ki tahqeeq ka zariya
Muhadditheen shahron aur mulkon ka safar karte the taake hadees barah-e-raast us ke raawi se sunein, sanad ki tahqeeq karein aur ghalti ka imkaan kam karein.
Hazrat Musa alaihissalam jaise jaleel-ul-qadr Nabi ka Hazrat Khizr alaihissalam ke paas jana talib-e-ilm ke liye tawazu ka bahut bada sabaq hai.
➤ Mukhtalif ulama se milne se wus‘at-e-nazar paida hoti hai
Ek hi ustad ya ek hi mahaul tak mehdood rehne ke bajaye mukhtalif ahl-e-ilm se mulaqat karne se mukhtalif daleel, manahij aur ilmi asaleeb samajh mein aate hain. Isi wajah se muhadditheen muta‘addid shuyukh se ilm hasil karte the.
Aalim ki majlis sawalat hal karne ka mauqa hai
Baaz auqat kitab parhne se ishkal paida hota hai, magar aalim ke samne baith kar sawal karne se chand minute mein masla wazeh ho jata hai. Qur’an ne usool diya:
“Agar tum nahi jaante to ahl-e-zikr se poochho.”
(Surah An-Nahl 16:43)
Imam Bukhari, Imam Muslim, Imam Ahmad aur doosre muhadditheen ki zindagiyan الرحلة في طلب العلم ki roshan misaalein hain.
➤ Bayan mein kehne ke liye ek jami‘ jumla
“Hamaare aslaaf ilm ko apne paas aane ka intezar nahi karte the, woh ilm ke paas jaate the. Ek hadees ke liye shehar badalte, ek Shaykh ke liye mulk ka safar karte, kyunki un ke nazdeek aalim se mulaqat sirf maloomat hasil karna nahi, balke ilm, adab, tarbiyat aur manhaj hasil karna tha.

❁ The Virtue of Meeting Scholars, Attending Their Gatherings, and Travelling in Search of Knowledge
Meeting scholars, sitting in their gatherings, and travelling in pursuit of knowledge are among the great scholarly traditions of the Salaf al-Saliheen (the righteous predecessors). Hadith scholars have discussed this tradition under the title (Travelling in Search of Knowledge).
❁ Travelling in Search of Knowledge Is the Way of the Prophets
Prophet Musa (عليه السلام) travelled to learn from Al-Khidr (عليه السلام). He said:
“May I follow you so that you may teach me some of the guidance you have been taught?”
(Surah Al-Kahf 18:66)
This verse teaches us that even a Prophet of great status travelled to someone who possessed knowledge in order to learn further. It highlights the importance of humility and the willingness to seek knowledge from others.
❁ The Early Scholars Travelled Long Distances Even to Learn a Single Hadith
Jabir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما) travelled for approximately one month to hear a hadith from Abdullah ibn Unais (رضي الله عنه). Imam Al-Bukhari (رحمه الله) mentioned this incident in Sahih al-Bukhari under the chapter Bab al-Khuruj fi Talab al-Ilm (The Chapter on Travelling in Search of Knowledge).
This demonstrates the great importance the early scholars attached to hearing a hadith directly from a scholar, even if it required a long journey.
❁ The Path of Knowledge Is a Path to Paradise
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever follows a path in pursuit of knowledge, Allah will make a path to Paradise easy for him through it.”
(Sahih Muslim: 2699)
This hadith strongly encourages seeking knowledge. It includes travelling to meet scholars, attending their lessons, and making efforts to acquire beneficial knowledge. Meeting Scholars in Person Provides Not Only Knowledge but Also Training and Character Development Books can provide access to a scholar’s knowledge, but sitting with scholars also offers opportunities to learn their manners, patience, piety, methods of reasoning, and approach to calling people to Islam.
For this reason, the early scholars did not merely collect books. They also sought the company of knowledgeable people and attended their gatherings to benefit from their knowledge and character.
Travelling to Scholars Is a Means of Verifying Knowledge and Preserving Chains of Narration Hadith scholars travelled between cities and countries to hear narrations directly from their transmitters, verify their chains of narration, and reduce the possibility of errors.
These scholarly journeys played a major role in establishing the great Islamic tradition of documenting chains of narration (asanid) and carefully verifying hadith.
❁ Meeting Scholars Develops Humility in the Pursuit of Knowledge
When a person meets scholars who possess greater knowledge, they begin to appreciate how vast the ocean of knowledge truly is.
The example of Prophet Musa (عليه السلام), a noble Prophet of Allah, travelling to meet Al-Khidr (عليه السلام) teaches students of knowledge an important lesson in humility and the willingness to learn from others.
Meeting Different Scholars Broadens One’s Understanding Rather than limiting oneself to a single teacher or learning environment, meeting different scholars helps a student understand various proofs, methodologies, and scholarly approaches.
This is one reason why hadith scholars travelled extensively and acquired knowledge from numerous teachers (shuyukh).
A Scholar’s Gathering Provides an Opportunity to Have Questions Answered
Sometimes, reading a book can raise questions or create confusion. However, asking a knowledgeable scholar directly can clarify an issue within a short time.
❁ The Qur’an establishes this principle:
“So ask the people of knowledge if you do not know.”
(Surah An-Nahl 16:43)
This verse establishes the importance of referring to knowledgeable people when one lacks understanding.
❁ In the Eyes of the Early Scholars, Learning from Many Teachers Was a Valuable Scholarly Asset
The great hadith scholars travelled to Makkah, Madinah, Iraq, Shaam, Egypt, Khurasan, and other regions, meeting and learning from hundreds of teachers.
The lives of Imam Al-Bukhari, Imam Muslim, Imam Ahmad, and other hadith scholars provide outstanding examples of الرحلة في طلب العلم (travelling in search of knowledge).
Their dedication demonstrates the effort, patience, and commitment required to acquire and preserve Islamic knowledge.
❁ Meeting Scholars Remains Important in Our Time
Online lessons and videos are great blessings, but they do not completely replace the benefits of sitting with scholars in person.
Whenever possible, students of knowledge should meet reliable scholars, attend their gatherings, ask questions, request their supplications, and benefit from their scholarly experience.
Such opportunities are a valuable investment in a student’s knowledge, understanding, and personal development.
❁ A Comprehensive Statement for a Speech
“Our righteous predecessors did not wait for knowledge to come to them; they travelled in search of it. They crossed cities to learn a single hadith and travelled across countries to meet a Shaykh, because they understood that meeting a scholar was not merely about acquiring information. It was also about learning manners, receiving guidance, developing character, and understanding the proper methodology of seeking and practising knowledge.
This is the true spirit of الرحلة في طلب العلم — travelling in search of knowledge.”
