Hijamah in Islam and the Sunnah
Hijamah is an established form of treatment in the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ himself underwent Hijamah and mentioned it as a means of treatment in several hadiths.
➤ Evidence from the Sunnah
❁ Ibn ‘Abbas رضي الله عنهما reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Healing is to be found in three things: drinking honey, the knife of the cupper, and cauterization with fire.”
Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Medicine, Hadith No. 5680.
❁ According to a hadith narrated by Jabir رضي الله عنه, the Prophet ﷺ said:
“If there is any good in your medical treatments, it is in the knife of the cupper, drinking honey, or cauterization with fire, as appropriate to the cause of the illness, but I would not like to be cauterized.”
Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Medicine, Hadith No. 5683.
❁ Anas ibn Malik رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was treated with Hijamah by Abu Tayyibah. He commanded that he should be given two measures of food, and he spoke with his tax-collectors, who reduced his taxes. He said:
“The best treatment you can use is cupping.”
References: Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Medicine, Hadith No. 5696; Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 1577.
❁ Ibn ‘Abbas رضي الله عنهما also reported:
“The Prophet ﷺ was treated with cupping, and he paid the cupper his fee.”
References: Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Medicine, Hadith No. 5691; Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 1202.
❁ Anas ibn Malik رضي الله عنه reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“I did not pass by any group on the night when I was taken on the Night Journey (Isra’), but they said to me: ‘O Muhammad, tell your Ummah to do cupping.’”
Reference: Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith No. 3477. The narration has corroborating evidence which strengthens it.
These narrations establish Hijamah as a recognized treatment in the Sunnah. The Prophet ﷺ underwent Hijamah himself, paid the cupper, and spoke of cupping as a means of treatment.
